Jeremie Frimpong ‘to get in way of Salah’ in crushing Liverpool admission

Arne Slot wasted no time in getting to work in the summer transfer window to improve his Liverpool squad for next season.

The Dutchman had a perfect start to life at Anfield last term, getting his hands on the Premier League title at the first time of asking.

The ambitions remain high for next season, though, with Slot hoping to repeat the success as well as add more silverware to his collection.

With that in mind, the boss has got straight to work, already signing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, with Milos Kerkez expected to be announced next.

Steve Nicol isn’t convinced by Frimpong

The summer has certainly been an exciting one for supporters at Anfield already.

Slot may have had a perfect Premier League campaign, but this is his first proper transfer window to put his own stamp on the squad.

The number of high-quality additions is impressive, and there are plenty wondering how the Reds will line up next season to fit everyone in.

There could well be several departures from Anfield now, with fringe players being pushed further out as a result of the new additions.

However, Steve Nicol has admitted that he thinks Slot may have gone overboard with his business when it comes to Frimpong.

Speaking live on ESPN (23 June), Nicol admitted he is not comfortable with the idea of Frimpong at right-back, saying: “If Salah’s not fit, then Frimpong starts where Salah plays.

“I’m interested to see what Arne Slot wants him to do. Because right now, in my head, I’m thinking, is he going to get in Salah’s way? That’s what I’m thinking.

“Defensively, it’s not good, it’s just the same as Trent. He’s not that good a defender.

“But going forward, he’s got different attributes to what Trent had, but again, I keep ending up at the same thing: is he going to get in Salah’s way?

“I think absolutely if everybody’s fit, Bradley starts; I don’t think Frimpong starts. I don’t see where he fits in, I really don’t.”

Slot in comfortable position with Liverpool

You can understand why Nicol may have reservations when it comes to Frimpong’s role in the Liverpool side next season.

However, if Alexander-Arnold didn’t have enough defensive qualities last season, his side certainly seemed to cope with that fine as they went on to win the league title.

Being able to sign Frimpong and have him as an option to play a more defensive or attacking role is exciting for Slot, and he doesn’t have to deploy him in the same way each time.

The boss has been given the backing by the Fenway Sports Group to sign several strong players this summer, and the fact that he will have so many different options when it comes to how he sets up is something to get excited about on Merseyside.
