Agbonlahor cannot believe Nunez reveal at Liverpool after £50m news

Darwin Nunez is looking towards the exit door at Liverpool this summer.

As Arne Slot gets work underway to strengthen his Liverpool side, Florian Wirtz’s impending arrival at Anfield is close to being completed.

Should the club record transfer go through, Slot is likely to offload several players, and Nunez could be the first of many to move towards the exit.

Nunez to say goodbye to Liverpool

Slot is pushing to strengthen his side over the summer, in the hope that they can go even further than another Premier League title.

The signing of Wirtz is a massive sign of intent from Slot, too, but it does leave questions over what will be next for some attackers in the squad.

Nunez has played regularly for the Reds this season, but his form has been frustrating for many at Anfield, with a lack of goal contributions.

It’s not just about his lack of goals either, the main annoyance for those watching the 25-year-old is just how many opportunities he has had but failed to put away.

Therefore, with Wirtz close to completing a move to Merseyside, Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested that it will signal the end for Nunez, with £50million wanted.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (17 June, 9:54 am), he said: “One that stands out for me in Nunez.

“If I told you his goal record for Liverpool compared to Benfica, obviously harder standard in the Premier League, but he only scored 40 goals in 143 games for Liverpool. That’s not a record that a Liverpool striker should have.

“Look at the strikers Liverpool have had in the past. Torres, Suarez, Fowler, Rush. So I think, for me, Nunez is one that will move on.

“Hopefully, they can get the £50m that they want.”

Liverpool must let Nunez go

While there is talent in the 25-year-old, Slot needs the most polished players in his Liverpool squad if he is going to carry on achieving the success he wants.

There is no doubt that Wirtz is an upgrade and rather than Nunez falling out of the picture, the Reds are right to be looking at cashing in if they can.

Given they have already spent a fair bit, a high asking price isn’t a bad idea, although if Liverpool want him to go this summer, there may have to be some breathing space further down the line.

As Agbonlahor points out, the Uruguay international is simply not at the standards that are expected at Anfield and with high hopes for next term, there are no room for passengers.

Nunez could well go elsewhere and perform, but Slot is unlikely to be able to rely on him in the way he would like to.
