Darwin Nunez exit ‘inevitable’ after new Liverpool developments

Darwin Nunez is looking increasingly likely to leave Liverpool this summer after a disappointing campaign.

Although he made 30 Premier League appearances for the Reds this season, just seven goal contributions left many feeling frustrated with Nunez.

What’s more, the forward has found himself in plenty of promising positions throughout the season, but on too many occasions, he lacked the final touch.

Nunez future mooted as Florian Wirtz set to join Liverpool

Arne Slot may have had a perfect start to life on Merseyside, but he is now ready to put his stamp on Liverpool further, in the hope of going for another Premier League title next term.

The Dutchman has wasted no time in making additions, having already signed Jeremie Frimpong in the first opening of the summer transfer window.

Florian Wirtz is set to be the next to sign, with a club record fee expected to bring the forward to Anfield.

This does leave questions over what it means for the current attackers in Liverpool’s ranks, with too many players for everyone to get a look in the squad.

Nunez has been linked with a move away, not helped by his disappointing season and once Wirtz joins, Jeff Stelling has admitted he has no doubts about what the future holds.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 June), he said: “I think he’s inevitably going to leave. Absolutely inevitable.

“When he first arrived there, I thought I liked him, he caused mayhem in opposition defences, and I liked his attitude.

“But, his goalscoring percentage, goals scored compared to opportunities made it’s not good enough for Liverpool.”

Nunez to leave Liverpool

Nunez isn’t a bad player, but being at a team with such high expectations is naturally going to draw attention to any mistakes that are made.

Wirtz is clearly an upgrade on the current Liverpool option, and Slot doesn’t need to carry anyone in the squad who he can’t see a role for.

The amount of missed chances means he is not reliable enough for a side that wants to push for another title, as well as a trophy next season.

As it stands, the Reds are certainly in the mode of bringing new faces in, but as the summer goes on, it will not be surprising to see exits from Anfield, and Nunez could well be one of those.

There may well be a player in there who has what it takes to succeed, but if that is the case, he needs to go and find that form elsewhere while Liverpool continues their progression under Slot.
