Mac Allister fires dig at Van Dijk in Liverpool centre-back plea

Liverpool are in an excellent position as they prepare for the summer transfer window to open again on 16 June.

It looked nervy for the Reds at points in the season with three key players approaching the ends of their contracts at Anfield, but only Trent Alexander-Arnold is making a move away.

Having Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in a squad is already a massive boost, but Arne Slot has not stopped there.

The Dutchman has already completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz is expected to be next.

Alexis Mac Allister wants his manager to look at another option this summer, too, though.

Mac Allister makes bold Cristian Romero statement

Before any of the contract issues were resolved at Anfield, there was plenty of stress from supporters over the potential of losing captain van Dijk.

Debates over who the most crucial player of the three was were constant, but mostly votes were split between van Dijk and Salah.

The centre-back has been hailed as the best defender in both the Premier League and world football and supporters were thrilled to be keeping him.

However, Reds midfielder Mac Allister has admitted that he thinks his side could be upgraded.

Currently on international duty with Argentina, the 26-year-old was asked by TNT Sports (10 June) which of his teammates he would like Liverpool to sign and he replied: “Oh, Cuti [Romero]. He’s a player I love.”

Without much hesitation, Mac Allister went on to explain: “The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence.

“For me, he’s been the best centre back in the world for several years.”

Van Dijk crucial to Liverpool title challenge

Mac Allister may not think he is playing alongside the best centre-back possible at club level, but van Dijk has certainly proved his abilities for Liverpool time and time again.

Naturally, Slot needs to upgrade his squad for next season in the hope of pushing for a second consecutive Premier League title.

However, the 33-year-old will continue to be a mainstay in the squad and do what he can to aid their hopes of the top.

van Dijk certainly had the better season.

The ability to contribute in the final third, as well as being a rock at the back, cannot be underestimated and he will be ready to show that in his performances once more.

Should Mac Allister be lifting another trophy with van Dijk next term, surely his perspective on this one will have to shift.
