Fabrizio Romano names Liverpool player he now expects to leave Anfield

Liverpool are expected to lose a member of their Premier League winning squad.

Despite last summer’s transfer window being a relatively quiet one at Anfield, Arne Slot was able to win the Premier League with a team he had largely inherited.

For his second season in charge, however, Slot’s Liverpool looks set to undergo many changes.

The Reds look set to strengthen with what could be the statement signing of the summer in German playmaker Florian Wirtz.

Departures are also to be expected, with certain players’ time on Merseyside seemingly nearing an end.

Federico Chiesa looks set to depart Anfield

Federico Chiesa was one of the few signings Liverpool made last summer, and it’s safe to say the move hasn’t worked out.

After arriving from Juventus for a fee of around £10million, Chiesa was set to add extra depth and competition for places in Liverpool’s forward line.

Instead, Chiesa featured just six times in the Premier League, starting only once. This limited gametime has seen the Italian winger linked with a move away.

Speaking on his personal YouTube channel (7 June), Romano provided an update on Chiesa.

“Federico Chiesa wants to play more,” Romano said. “He doesn’t want to spend another season 90 per cent of the time on the bench.

“My understanding is that there is a concrete possibility for Chiesa to leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window.”

Chiesa has struggled so far at Liverpool.

Chiesa, 27, initially burst onto the scene as an integral part of Italy’s victorious Euro 2020 campaign.

Whilst the pacy forward has been unable to reach those heights again whilst playing in England, injuries have held him back at times.

Even when Chiesa did have a clean bill of health, Slot has never really handed the Italian any significant minutes, even when the Reds were chasing certain games.

AC Milan and Napoli are interested in bringing Chiesa back to Italy, and it is hard to imagine Slot begging the winger to stay.

Liverpool should cut ties with Chiesa

Slot clearly does not trust Chiesa enough to use him regularly, and he is not the only one.

The likes of Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez also rarely featured last season, and their futures are up in the air.

Following the success of his first season, Slot has more than earned the right to move on the players that he deems to be surplus to requirements.

As harsh as it may seem, if the Dutch manager is going to let these players rot on the bench, then it is in Liverpool’s best interests to recoup as much cash as possible from the players that he does not see a use for.
