Wirtz to Liverpool: Which shirt number could Bayer Leverkusen ace wear at Anfield?

Liverpool look set to continue their rampant start to the transfer window with the addition of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

The Reds have already secured Jeremie Frimpong’s signature from the German outfit in what was Arne Slot’s first signing of the summer.

Wirtz recently took to his Instagram story to rubbish claims he was demanding the No.10 shirt at Anfield, currently held by Alexis Mac Allister.

This action has somewhat confirmed Wirtz’s move to Liverpool, with the Merseyside club already having a first bid of £105million rejected by Leverkusen but set to come in again.

Wirtz’s potential shirt number at Anfield

Given the expectation that Liverpool will fork out a club-record fee for Wirtz’s services, they will want to crown their new capture with an iconic number.

However, the Premier League champions already have the most in-demand choices occupied by their current stars.

As previously mentioned, Wirtz won’t be able to continue using the No.10 shirt he currently owns at Leverkusen and will have to look for some new inspiration at Anfield.

The No.7 could be made available if Luis Diaz’s reported move to Saudi Arabia becomes reality, although that deal may not take place before the German moves to Liverpool.

A more realistic option could be No.27, the shirt Wirtz wore at Leverkusen before switching to No.10. This choice would work for both parties, with the number currently unoccupied amongst the Reds’ squad.

The 22-year-old currently dons No.17 for the German national team but would have to persuade Curtis Jones to find a new number if he wanted to go down that avenue.

As a result, the most likely scenario at this point in time will see Wirtz return to No.27 at his new club.

Liverpool stamping their authority early in the transfer window

Few would’ve predicted that Arne Slot would guide Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season at the club, especially due to the less-than-impressive nature of the Reds’ 2024 summer window.

Now, the higher-ups at Anfield look set to back their manager, breaking the bank to acquire the Leverkusen duo of Frimpong and Wirtz.

This is exactly the attitude the club had to approach this summer with, as they aim to successfully defend the top-flight title for the first time since 1984.

Arsenal and Man City are sure to bounce back next term, making this early window business from Liverpool all the more important.
