Premier League star makes ‘strange’ Virgil van Dijk comparison

Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the Premier League.

The Anfield star has shown no sign of slowing down despite a brutal anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 2020/21 campaign and his advancing age.

The Reds’ captain was a vital figure in their Premier League-winning campaign under Arne Slot, making 37 appearances in the top flight this season.

The Dutch defender is set to lead the Reds for the foreseeable future after signing a two-year contract extension to end speculation over his future back in April.

Fulham star makes strange Van Dijk claim

Rodrigo Muniz has been one of the most promising strikers in the Premier League this season, notching eight goals for Marco Silva’s side.

Asked who has been his toughest opponent to face, the Cottagers forward named two defenders in a strange response, Reds star Van Dijk and Manchester United ace Harry Maguire.

Speaking to The Athletic (4 June), he said: “The perfect centre-back would be a mix of Maguire and Van Dijk.

“It is very difficult to play against both of them, both have so much quality, both in the physicality and the pace.”

Van Dijk comparison will have Liverpool fans in stitches

Van Dijk is a Rolls-Royce of a defender, a player who terrorises attackers and gives them very little chance of threatening Alisson’s goal.

Meanwhile, Maguire is often a liability, struggling to cope with the demands of captaining the Red Devils, and is known for his error-prone nature.

He has stepped up with England, that cannot be questioned, but for Ruben Amorim’s side, he is a symptom of everything wrong, as they finished 15th in the top-flight this season.

Considering that the duo cost a similar fee for their respective clubs, around the £75-80million mark, the Reds definitely got the better deal ahead of their arch-rivals.

Slot’s other centre-back, Ibrahima Konate, is miles better than Maguire, never mind comparisons with Van Dijk from the Brazilian attacker.

The two should not be named in the same sentence, it is utterly disrespectful to the L4 star, as he is ten times the player and there is a huge difference between their respective abilities.

The Dutchman is widely regarded as one of the best players in world football, the Englishman, on the other hand, is considered a laughing stock by many observers.
