Manchester United backed ‘to hijack’ Wirtz transfer at Liverpool before Fernandes bombshell

Liverpool are looking to complete the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds are locked in negotiations to bring the German international to Anfield, with a massive £109million offer on the table.

Arne Slot is keen to bring the 22-year-old to Merseyside in an attempt to secure a second successive Premier League title.

There was competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but the Reds seem to have come out on top.

Man United tipped to steal Liverpool Wirtz deal

Ruben Amorim’s side were a laughing stock this season but are still expected to make major moves in the market.

They have signed Wolves star Matheus Cunha, who had been linked with the Reds and look set to add Bryan Mbeumo to their ranks too.

The Red Devils have been tipped to hijack any deal for Wirtz, too, amid ongoing speculation over the future of Bruno Fernandes, who was linked with a mega-money switch to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal.

Andy Goldstein raised the question live on talkSPORT (2 June, 15:07), saying: “Last week, we heard the news that Liverpool had offered around £109million for Florian Wirtz. Anfield, of course, still seems like his most likely destination.

“At the same time, Bruno Fernandes looks likely to head to Saudi Arabia in the coming weeks for around £100million.

“Would Man United be able to hijack the deal for Wirtz with that kind of money?”

Liverpool should seal Wirtz deal amid Fernandes decision

Liverpool would not have been phased if United entered the race, why would a player choose the Red Devils over Slot’s side at the moment?

The Dutchman led the Reds to the title, and they are clearly on an upward trajectory, whereas United have no European football next season and hilariously finished 15th in the table.

Goldstein argued that the Old Trafford outfit were still the biggest team in the world in the aftermath of his suggestion but that is simply not true at the moment.

Regardless, the attempted hijack will definitely not happen anyway because Fernandes is set to stay at United after rejecting an approach from the Saudi outfit, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The champions now need to focus on getting Wirtz over the line and adding even more quality to their team, with Milos Kerkez also close to joining.

If the L4 outfit can pull off both of those deals, they will surely be the favourites to retain their crown and potentially add a seventh Champions League title to their trophy cabinet.
