Al-Hilal are hunting for new sporting director

With the Club World Cup starting on 14 June, the Saudi Pro League club are aiming to bring in new players during the tournament transfer window from 1 June to 10 June.

To supervise these incomings, Al-Hilal are gunning to hire a new sporting director, and someone who formally held this position at Liverpool is one of the targeted names.

According to talkSPORT, Michael Edwards, who was sporting director from 2016 to 2022 at the Merseyside club, is a top candidate for the position.

Al-Hilal have approached Edwards and their president Fahad bin Nafel is reported to have personally reached out to discuss the position with the current CEO of Football at FSG.

However, the 45-year-old is happy in his current position and made it clear he won’t be leaving anytime soon.

Another name linked with the job is Paul Mitchell who is leaving his role of sporting director at Newcastle United after less than a year.

Edwards had major success in this role at Liverpool

Edwards was an unsung hero during his time as sporting director at Liverpool and was a major cog in the success of the Merseyside club under Jurgen Klopp.

The now CEO of Football at FSG was responsible for bringing in the likes of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Fabinho and Sadio Mane who were all key to Liverpool’s title-winning side.

The sale of Philippe Coutinho was also overseen by Edwards which brought in a whopping £135 million for the Reds which would go on to fund the transfers of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

After six years at Liverpool, the 45-year-old left the club in 2022 before being rehired by FSG to take up the CEO of Football position.
