Liverpool star ‘will not play again’ this season as Slot drops injury update

Arne Slot has confirmed that one Liverpool player has already played for the final time this season.

Slot’s side have already won the Premier League. Therefore, the final games of the season carry little significance for the Reds.

Liverpool players and staff have already started celebrating their title victory, with Slot himself spending a few days in Ibiza before the 3-2 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Monday (19 May).

With just one game remaining in this Premier League season, preparations are already being made for the summer and the next campaign.

Alexis Mac Allister to have an extended break at Liverpool

Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, and the midfielder has run himself into the ground.

The Argentinian missed the defeat to his old club Brighton, and was not even named on the bench as he spent the night in the stands.

There is no fresh injury to be worried about, though, as Slot has confirmed that the midfielder is being given an extended rest after what has been a long season, and he will not play a minute next week.

“Alexis will not play for us this season anymore,” Slot said after the defeat at Brighton.

“He needs rest at this moment in time to recover completely and to be ready for the start of next season, but it will be no problem for him to be back next season. I think he played throughout the last part of the season with the Argentinian mentality he has.

“Never gives up, no matter what he feels, but it is not smart to play a player that has, not a big injury, but something to take a risk with.”

Liverpool should rotate against Crystal Palace

The Brighton defeat saw rare starts handed to Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott, and Slot should continue to rotate as Liverpool host Crystal Palace at Anfield in their final game of the season on Sunday (25 May).

Both teams are already on the beach, with Palace beating Man City 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday (17 May), and unable to finish higher or lower than 12th in the Premier League.

With nothing to play for, a lot of regular starters can be given a break, rather than taking a risk over their fitness, and fringe players can be given another opportunity.

The whole squad will be in attendance at Anfield, as Liverpool will then lift the Premier League trophy in front of their fans, meaning that Mac Allister cannot fly off on an early holiday just yet.
