Liverpool ‘to sell Darwin Nunez’, Tottenham hero backed to replace him

Darwin Nunez has faced heavy criticism on talkSPORT with the Liverpool forward struggling in his side’s title-winning season.

Liverpool lost 3-2 to Brighton on Monday night, with the Premier League champions potentially already on the beaches after a strong season.

The Reds led twice, but Harvey Elliot and Dominic Szoboszlai’s goals were not enough as they were pegged back by Brighton.

Eventually, substitute Jack Hinshelwood scored an 85th-minute winner for the Seagulls.

The result means Arne Slot’s men are winless in their last three outings, with two losses and a draw.

This has led to criticism of Liverpool’s forward line, with many failing to impact the game.

Nunez’s performance ‘enough to warrant his sale’

Former Rangers striker Ally McCoist predicts that Liverpool will sell Nunez in the summer after an underwhelming campaign for the Uruguayan.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist says that despite the positive parts of Nunez’s game, he is too wasteful in front of goal.

“He’s one of those players that I’m wanting him to do well because I like the way he plays the game. He’s all action,” said McCoist.

“Plays at a high tempo, he’s aggressive, he’s on the front foot. You can see he wants to do well, but the little bit of quality in front of goal, we’re now at a stage where it has to improve.

“You can only be unlucky a few times.”

Bayern Munich star Harry Kane tipped to sign for Liverpool

McCoist added that he believes Tottenham hero Harry Kane, whos’ won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich this season, would be a good shout to replace Nunez.

He said: “I’m not sure they will (persist with Nunez going forward).

“I told you what I’d do, and they laughed at me. I’d go and test the water for Harry Kane.”

Nunez has been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent days.

Nunez has rarely featured under Slot this season

Goal have reported that Napoli, Atlético Madrid and multiple clubs in the Saudi Pro League are interested in securing his signature.

Slot evidently does not trust Nunez to lead the line for his side. He has handed the former Benfica man just eight starts in the league this season.

As McCoist said, Nunez undoubtedly possesses valuable qualities that make him a handful for defenders.

However, his erratic nature in front of goal has proved to be costly for Liverpool at times over the last few seasons.

Now, at the age of 25, a parting of ways could benefit both club and player. Darwin Nunez could move away and get more gametime, whilst Slot would have the opportunity to sign a forward suited to his system.

When Mohamed Salah’s extraordinary output slows down, as it has done in recent weeks, it shows how apparent it is that Liverpool need to bolster their frontline in the summer.

If Liverpool want to retain the Premier League title next season, they need to ease some of the attacking burden that is placed on the Egyptian.
