Liverpool legends reacts as Xabi Alonso sends farewell message

Xabi Alonso is a bona fide legend at Liverpool, and that has never changed.

The Spanish maestro was part of the Reds team that won the Champions League in 2005 and also lifted the FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup with the Anfield outfit.

He retired from playing in 2017 and has since forged a managerial career that includes winning the Bundesliga while going unbeaten with Bayer Leverkusen in a historic season.

He was linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp before Arne Slot took the role, and several ex-Reds have reacted to his latest career move.

Agger responds to Alonso farewell message

Alonso is expected to become the new Real Madrid manager for the start of the new campaign, in a move that will no doubt anger Reds supporters.

He took to Instagram (19 May) to share a farewell message to the Leverkusen fans, saying: “Lived it. Loved it.

“Forever Bayer04 Leverkusen.”

Daniel Agger liked the post, and Momo Sissoko commented, saying “boss” with a heart emoji.

Jay Spearing also commented with two clapping hands emojis and a fire one.

Alonso set to manage Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold seems set to join the legendary midfield at the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old announced that he will leave his boyhood club, and the Spanish giants are widely expected to be his destination.

If it were any other club, Reds supporters may have been encouraging towards the duo, but as it is Los Blancos, they will likely hope that they crash and burn as quickly as possible.

The L4 outfit have lost two of their last three Champions League final appearances to the Madrid team and there is no love lost between the sides, especially given the circumstances of the England star’s impending departure.

The Three Lions ace has engineered the situation, signing a four-year deal last time and has failed to communicate his intentions for the majority of the season, in a move that did not go down well with supporters with some even burning shirts after the announcement was made.

If the sides are drawn together in next year’s edition of the Champions League, the Anfield faithful will be desperate to get one over on the 15-time champions and, perhaps more importantly, their former players.
