Jeremie Frimpong ready to join Liverpool as transfer talks advance

Jeremie Frimpong appears to be on the verge of joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen.

Trent Alexander-Arnold rocked Liverpool with the news that he would be departing the Reds when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The right-back’s decision was met with boos and heckling from the Anfield crowd during the 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal on Sunday (11 May) as a civil war erupted between Liverpool supporters.

Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid. As a result, Arne Slot will be left with a huge void on the right side of his defence.

Liverpool on the verge of agreement with Frimpong

It appears as though Slot is wasting no time securing a replacement for Alexander-Arnold.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg (15 May), Liverpool on the verge of reaching a verbal agreement with Frimpong, with talks progressing and additional details still to be clarified.

Frimpong, who has a release clause worth somewhere between £29.5-33.7million, is reportedly ready to join Liverpool, and although a deal is not yet agreed, it is looking positive for the Reds.

Frimpong would be a great signing for Liverpool

Frimpong is one of the best attacking right-backs in world football, putting up creative numbers that rival Alexander-Arnold.

The former Manchester City academy ace notched five goals and five assists in 33 Bundesliga matches this season, and German football expert Kevin Hatchard told Liverpool News that the 24-year-old would be an amazing signing for the Reds.

He has doubts over Frimpong’s defensive abilities. However, that could be solved by using the number six as an extra centre-back out of possession or signing a solely defensive left-back that will not contribute to the attack.

Reds supporters will hark back to the days of peak Jurgen Klopp, when both full-backs were bombing down the wings, bagging assists for fun, and causing nightmares for opposing defences. However, Slot’s style of play seems to be more pragmatic.

Therefore, if the Reds do sign Frimpong, it will be interesting to see how the Dutch head coach adjusts his system to fit him in and what happens to Conor Bradley’s playing time.
