Alexander-Arnold now defended by former Premier League manager amid Liverpool fury

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s messy situation at Liverpool has caused a storm in recent days, with the defender slammed by the fanbase.

Liverpool fans heavily booed the right-back as he came on at Anfield in their draw against Arsenal, with the manner of his upcoming move to Real Madrid causing significant anger.

Many have criticised Liverpool fans in the days that followed, given that the 26-year-old has won everything possible with the club before starting his new adventure abroad.

However, many Liverpool fans believe his legacy has been forever tarnished as a result of his exit, but this may not be the case in the long term.

Russell Martin claims Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool legacy will survive

Former Southampton manager and Norwich City right-back Russell Martin has now weighed in on the Alexander-Arnold debate, and defended his upcoming move to Real Madrid.

Martin, who is currently out of work, claimed that despite the hatred now, Alexander-Arnold’s legacy at Anfield will stand the test of time.

“It saddens me. In time it will be celebrated, his career there,” Martin told the BBC.

Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool legacy

“A homegrown player. Every fan wants to see someone living their dream, playing for their club, and he’s done it, and he’s won everything they can.

“At some point, people will realise he’s got the opportunity to experience something completely different to other people, and he’s taken that, and fair play to him.

“It’s a brave move, and he’ll represent Liverpool in a different way abroad.”

Liverpool fans have not forgiven other departures

Liverpool have had several high-profile players leave over the years, and some were also given a hard time after their exits.

Fernando Torres went from hero to villain at Anfield after he moved to Premier League rivals Chelsea, while Luis Suarez was also booed when he returned with Barcelona.

Over time, these two players have eventually been remembered by some for the greatness they achieved at Anfield, but neither won as much as Alexander-Arnold.

Michael Owen and Steve McManaman also became unpopular at Liverpool after their exits, but they have still not recovered in this sense even now.

Alexander-Arnold hit higher heights than these players, but his move has caused such anger that may be difficult for his reputation to recover, even in the long-term.
