Danny Murphy lost for words at new negative Virgil van Dijk footage at Liverpool

Liverpool were left disappointed after throwing away a two-goal lead to draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

Goals from Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz in almost immediate succession put the Reds in a strong position going into the break.

However, a lapse in concentration at the back allowed Gabriel Martinelli to score just after half time before Mikel Merino got the Gunners back into it, finishing 2-2.

A ringing out of boos in response to Trent Alexander-Arnold being substituted on seemingly changed the atmosphere inside Anfield and in the end, it was a disappointing afternoon for Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk footage crashes in Liverpool draw

Liverpool already have their hands on the Premier League trophy, so the results between now and the end of the campaign count for nothing.

However, with the pressure that is already on Arne Slot and his side ahead of next season, victory against Arsenal could have been a real statement of intent.

Arsenal are a good side, but it hasn’t been typical to see the Merseyside outfit throw away victories throughout this season, suggesting they were below their usual levels.

Martinelli’s goal was a result of too much space in the box, as Virgil van Dijk failed to stick with his man.

It’s not what you’d expect to see from the centre-back, and it left Danny Murphy speechless on Match of the Day 2 (11 May).

Murphy admitted: “This is one for the books, van Dijk. Couldn’t think what I was saying there.

“You just don’t see it very often, so I’m lost for words. But van Dijk tries to guess the pass towards Odegaard and let’s Martinelli set.

Liverpool need to end season on a high

It has been an excellent debut season for Slot and he will be feeling proud of what he’s achieved, ready to push on in the hope of going even better next year.

While the results don’t matter for now, Liverpool should be looking to end the campaign on a high note before taking the summer to prepare for the new term.

Van Dijk has been excellent once more, and supporters will be relieved that he is one man who has extended his stay on Merseyside.

Van Dijk has been strong for Liverpool again.

However, the Reds can’t forget they have something to prove so now is not the time to let the standards drop, a clear message has to be sent out.

Everyone can be afforded a mistake, and Murphy’s reaction shows how rare it is in the case of the Dutchman but the Reds have to be prepared to put things right against Brighton.
