Cody Gakpo responds to Jeremie Frimpong message amid Liverpool links

Arne Slot will soon turn his attention to the summer transfer window as Liverpool have only two Premier League games remaining.

The Reds have taken their foot off the gas after being crowned top-flight champions and are now winless in two outings.

Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea on 4 May before being held to a 2-2 draw by Arsenal on Sunday, despite initially holding a two-goal lead.

Meanwhile, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Merseyside at the end of the season, Slot’s men have set their sights on a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Gakpo responds to Frimpong’s Bayer Leverkusen message

Leverkusen suffered a 4-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but Frimpong got himself on the scoresheet for Xabi Alonso’s men.

After his side’s defeat, the 24-year-old wrote on Instagram (11 May): “Not the result we wanted in our last home game of the season, but still a special day. Thank you for backing us.”

Netherlands international teammate Cody Gakpo gave the post a like.

Frimpong could be an ideal Alexander-Arnold replacement for Liverpool

While Alexander-Arnold was given a tough reception by Anfield on Sunday as the Reds drew with Arsenal, he could prove to be a difficult man to replace.

Perhaps the 26-year-old’s most impressive characteristic is his tendency to regularly notch goal contributions, and he most recently scored in a 1-0 win over Leicester on 20 April.

But Frimpong, who operates as a wing-back for Leverkusen, has also proven his attacking capabilities in recent seasons, as his return of 14 goals and 10 assists last term helped Alonso’s men win the Bundesliga and the German Cup in a remarkable unbeaten domestic season.

This season, the 24-year-old has managed a more modest return of five goals and nine assists, but he could still have what it takes to fill Alexander-Arnold’s illustrious boots at Anfield.

Slot could still turn to Conor Bradley as the long-term replacement for the Liverpudlian, but there is no doubt that Frimpong presents himself as a solid option.
