Rangers new manager: Jurgen Klopp ally in running in fresh Liverpool twist

Liverpool supporters may see a familiar face take the reins at Rangers after Steven Gerrard.

Rangers enjoyed success during Gerrard’s three-year reign at Ibrox, as he led them to Scottish Premiership glory in the 2020-21 season.

However, things have not gone according to plan since the Anfield hero left Glasgow, with Celtic winning each of the four league titles since.

The Light Blues are therefore at a crossroads, as they await a much-awaited takeover by a US consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and Leeds United owners 49ers Enterprises.

Pep Lijnders in running for Rangers job

Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe are on course to acquire a 51 per cent stake at Rangers ahead of the summer.

One of the first major decisions they are expected to make after coming into power at Ibrox is to appoint a new manager, as Barry Ferguson’s tenure as the caretaker expires at the end of the season.

In a surprising turn of events, Pep Lijnders has emerged as an option to take the reins in Glasgow.

BetVictor has mentioned the former Liverpool assistant coach as one of the candidates to become the next Rangers manager.

The Dutchman has notably been given 33/1 odds of taking charge as the Light Blues’ boss.

Lijnders is currently without a job after being sacked as the Red Bull Salzburg manager in December.

Before his spell in Austria, the 42-year-old served as the assistant to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool for six years between 2018 and 2024.

Liverpool hero Gerrard favourite for Ibrox job

Meanwhile, Gerrard is also a genuine option to become Rangers’ next manager this summer.

The Liverpool icon has been without a job after leaving Al-Ettifaq in January and is a 5/1 odds-on favourite to return to Ibrox.

According to The Telegraph, Gerrard is one of over 10 candidates under consideration at the Glasgow club.

Apart from the Englishman, Gary O’Neil, Russell Martin, and Rob Edwards are also in the running for the hotseat at Ibrox.
