Carragher hits out at Arteta after what he said about Liverpool – ‘Mocked’

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Mikel Arteta ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League trip to Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal will be forced to give Liverpool a guard of honour when they face them at Anfield on Sunday (11 May) after losing the Premier League title race.

With this season’s disappointment, the Gunners have come up short in the Premier League title race three times in a row, much to Arteta’s frustration.

The North London giants suffered further embarrassment this week after losing 3-1 on aggregate against PSG in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Carragher says Arteta will be mocked for Liverpool statement

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Anfield, Arteta revealed that the Gunners would give Liverpool a guard of honour.

However, the Spanish tactician’s comments about the Reds and the Premier League title race have irked the Merseyside-based club’s fans.

Arteta suggested that Arsenal have been unlucky to win trophies in the last three seasons, claiming that Liverpool managed to win the league with fewer points than his team had in the last two campaigns.

He went on to say that the London-based club would have won the title this time had they earned the same points as they did in the last two seasons.

Carragher is therefore of the view that it is no wonder Arteta is being ‘mocked’ for his statement about Liverpool, which he feels was ‘not clever’.

“Arteta comparing Liverpool’s title-winning performance to Arsenal’s runners-up spot in 2023 and 2024 on the eve of facing the new champions was not clever, either”, Carragher wrote in a column on The Telegraph‘s website (9 May).

“If Liverpool win their next three games, they will finish on 91 points.

“That’s more than any Arsenal side in history, which is why Arteta’s observation in midweek about Arne Slot winning with fewer points after 35 games than Arsenal won after 38 in the past two years will be mocked.”

Arne Slot to prove point v Arsenal

Liverpool appear to have already taken their foot off the pedal, as they have nothing else to play for this season.

This was evident during their trip to Stamford Bridge last weekend, as the Reds succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Chelsea.

However, it will not be a surprise if Arne Slot sets his team to claim three points when Arsenal travel to Merseyside on Sunday.

Previewing the game for Sky Sports’ Super6, Carragher even predicted a 2-1 victory in the hosts’ favour.
