Liverpool ‘to embarrass Tottenham again’ as Sky Sports drop £60m Mbeumo update

Tottenham could be left with egg on their face as they battle Liverpool to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer.

Liverpool are determined to build on their success this season, with FSG prepared to back Arne Slot with major signings in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also braced for a busy summer transfer window, as they look to bounce back from what has been a disappointing campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs are one of the favourites to win the UEFA Europa League, but a bottom-half finish in the Premier League has already put Postecoglou’s future in serious doubt.

Therefore, both clubs are expected to be active in the transfer market ahead of next season.

Mbeumo to leave Brentford for £60million

Liverpool and Tottenham have competed for the same player on several occasions in the past, with Luis Diaz among those who were embroiled in a transfer saga between the two Premier League giants in recent history.

Spurs looked destined to acquire Diaz’s services in January 2022 when the Merseyside-based club swooped in to sign the Colombia international for £37m.

There could be a similar situation this year, as Liverpool and Tottenham compete for Mbeumo’s signature.

Mbeumo is expected to put an end to his six-year spell with Brentford this summer, as the Bees consider offers for him, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcasters reported via their live transfer centre on Thursday (8 May) that Thomas Frank’s side will let the Cameroon international join a bigger club if their valuation is met.

The price tag is thought to be in excess of £60m, as he effectively has two years remaining on his current contract.

Liverpool to beat Tottenham to Mbeumo’s signing

It is worth noting that Tottenham already have a young left winger in their ranks in the shape of Brennan Johnson, while Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert are also capable of operating in that position.

Spurs also have Dominic Solanke in their ranks, meaning Mbeumo would have to compete for a starting place in North London.

While the competition is also stiff at Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah expected to keep his place on the right side of attack after signing a two-year contract extension, the 25-year-old has a better pathway at Anfield.

The Reds are expected to eventually replace Salah, who turns 33 next month, paving the way for Mbeumo to take over as Slot’s go-to man on the right flank.

Until then, he could operate as the champions’ first-choice striker, as they look to upgrade on Darwin Nunez this summer.

This is why Liverpool could embarrass Tottenham as they did with Diaz’s signing three years ago.
