Liverpool ‘to fix Federico Chiesa disaster’ with Mateo Retegui transfer

Richard Hughes signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus last season, but it’s safe to say his time at Liverpool has been underwhelming.

The sporting director joined the Reds from Bournemouth in 2024 and has only had two transfer windows to work with since then.

Chiesa has been Arne Slot’s only incoming signing since replacing Jurgen Klopp, and the Italy international hasn’t played a significant role this season.

That hasn’t stopped the Dutch manager from winning the Premier League at Anfield in his debut campaign, but the Merseyside outfit must now surely reinforce the squad next summer.

Chiesa transfer from Juventus hasn’t worked out

Chiesa has found game time hard to come by at the Reds, with consistent fitness issues hampering him.

Slot hasn’t required new signings this season, as the former Feyenoord head coach has managed to get the best out of Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo.

With the former Juventus ace struggling, Hughes hasn’t had an encouraging start to life in his role at Anfield.

The sporting director is willing to take risks by pursuing more players in Serie A to fix the error made with the 27-year-old Italian’s signing.

Mateo Retegui transfer wanted by Liverpool next summer

Mohammed Salah has renewed his contract at Anfield, making it difficult to see Chiesa getting regular opportunities next season as well.

Gakpo is also trusted to play on the left-hand side of the attack, leaving the Italian forward with a decision to make after a disastrous spell.

While the Reds are currently stacked in attack, Slot may lose Darwin Nunez in the coming months as he could potentially leave the Merseyside outfit after failing to live up to expectations.

Liverpool may need to bolster their number nine position next summer, and Mateo Retegui is on their radar, according to AnfieldWatch.

The news outlet reports (3 May) that the Reds are scouring the Italian market and have identified the Atalanta striker as a target.

It’s been claimed that Hughes is pushing for arrivals from Italy and hasn’t been put off by Chiesa’s arguable failure at Anfield.

It looks like the sporting director may be looking to right the wrongs from last summer, with Retegui one of the most in-form centre-forwards in the world right now.

With Diogo Jota also unconvincing at the Reds, the 26-year-old Italy international’s signing may be needed in the upcoming transfer window.

Whether the Merseysiders will sign him remains to be seen.
