Carragher reacts to more major Liverpool transfer news he’s been told

Liverpool recently tied Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk down to new deals in an almighty boost.

With only a second ever Premier League title also secured, it gives further cause for celebration on the red half of Merseyside.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may be on his way to Real Madrid, but two out of three staying on is not bad going.

And in more good news for Liverpool, it now seems as though another player is about to put pen to paper at Anfield.

Luis Diaz set to sign new Liverpool contract

It was widely reported on Friday (2 April) that Luis Diaz is the next Liverpool player who is set to stay on.

The Colombia international has two years left on his existing deal, but it is claimed he will commit beyond then.

And sharing his reaction to the update live on Sky Sports, as shared by the broadcaster’s X account (2 April), Jamie Carragher said: “It’s an interesting one…

“If you flip a coin, some would say they’d love to see him sign, others will say it’s a good time to get some money for him because he’s at a good age.

“If you sign him on a four-or-five year deal then you won’t get that resale value in the future. He’s been one of the best left-wingers in the Premier League this season, but he’s not Sadio Mane.

“Liverpool haven’t truly replaced him, but how many of them are there? If I’m being honest, for the majority of the season, up until Christmas, I thought ‘you sell Luis Diaz in the summer’.

“The fact he can now play through the middle, I think he stays and others in the front line will move on instead of Diaz.”

Diaz deserves new Liverpool contract

As Carragher says, for a long time it looked as though Diaz may well be on his way come the end of the season.

However, he has played an important – if not sometimes under the radar – role in Liverpool’s Premier League title success.

Diaz’s Premier League record at Liverpool this season

Diaz scored in the 5-1 win over Tottenham in his most recent appearance to make it 12 goal and five assists in 33 Premier League games this season.

While those figures are nowhere near close to Salah’s, it is above average in the Premier League and therefore he deserves his new deal.

Diaz may not be Mane, as Carragher puts it, but the balance of the side works brilliantly and Arne Slot will want to keep things as similar as possible going forward.
