Alan Shearer admits Salah ‘nightmare’ as Liverpool star closes in on record

Alan Shearer has made his feelings about Mohamed Salah apparent as the Liverpool superstar closes in on another all-time Premier League record.

Salah has been one of Liverpool‘s best players since joining them from AS Roma in 2017, and it has been no different this season, with 33 goals and 23 assists to his name.

The Reds have nothing to play for in their remaining games, having already clinched the Premier League title, but the same is not true for the Egypt international.

Salah is on the verge of numerous Premier League records, not least Shearer and Andrew Cole’s tally of the most goals and assists in a single season.

Shearer warns defenders over Salah

Salah has 28 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League this season, meaning he is only two goal contributions away from breaking Shearer and Cole’s tally of 47 in the 1994-95 and 1993-94 respectively.

Barring any late surprises, the 32-year-old will break a 30-year-old Premier League record by the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Shearer is not bothered about Salah’s breaking his record, having been impressed by the left-footer’s achievements over the last eight years.

Instead, the Newcastle icon expects the attacker to be as good as ever in his remaining two seasons at Anfield despite his age.

Shearer believes Salah will continue to be a ‘nightmare’ for defenders next season.

“Salah is looking as good, fit and sharp as we’ve ever seen him, and there’s no reason to doubt that this will change”, Shearer wrote in a column on the Betfair website (2 May).

“For me, it won’t. I think we’ll see the same Salah next season. He hasn’t had serious injuries, he still looks as good, quick and sharp as he always has.

“He’s going to be a nightmare for defenders over the next two years.”

Salah to break more records at Liverpool

Salah could also break the record for the most assists by a player in a Premier League season.

Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry currently hold that record, having provided 20 assists in the 2019-20 and 2002-03 seasons, respectively.

That means the Liverpool superstar only needs three more assists to make that record his own.

Having signed a two-year contract extension at Liverpool, Salah could break many more records before he leaves.
