Liverpool legend now in ‘pole position’ to join Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid

Liverpool are set to lose defender Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, in a huge blow for the Reds.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah signed new contracts to keep them at Anfield, but as it stands, Alexander-Arnold looks headed for the exit door.

The right-back is set to join Real Madrid, and he could be joined by a Liverpool legend in the capital of Spain.

Real Madrid are set to part ways with manager Carlo Ancelotti, and their new manager will likely make the Liverpool defender his first signing.

Xabi Alonso set to join Real Madrid

Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso is currently managing Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, but he is now set to leave after nearly three years in charge.

According to The Athletic (April 27), Alonso is now in “pole position” to replace Ancelotti at Real Madrid this summer, and the move could even take place before the Club World Cup.

Ancelotti’s disappointing season has seen Real Madrid lose the Copa Del Rey final, fall behind in La Liga and lose to Arsenal in the Champions League.

Alonso is seen as the perfect candidate, and this will see him link up with Alexander-Arnold for the first time.

Alonso could have replaced Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Alonso turned down the chance to manage Liverpool last summer, when he was targeted as the replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Arne Slot took the role instead, and has led Liverpool to the Premier League title in an unexpectedly outstanding season.

The Spaniard will now return to another one of his former clubs in Real Madrid, and he is set to inherit Alexander-Arnold as his first signing.

Leverkusen have played with attacking wing-backs under Alonso, with Jeremie Frimpong and Alex Grimaldo thriving, and Alexander-Arnold may find that the former midfielder is the perfect manager for him to succeed in Madrid.

Many Liverpool fans are furious that Alexander-Arnold will leave on a free transfer, but perhaps the opportunity of playing under Alonso has played a part in his decision to leave his boyhood club.
