Paul Merson names only player he expects Liverpool to sign

Paul Merson has revealed the type of transfer activity he expects to see from Liverpool this summer.

The Reds are currently preparing to face Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday (27 April), where just one point will see them crowned as Premier League champions.

However, because of how comfortable Arne Slot’s men have been in this title race, the Merseyside giants already have one eye on next season.

Liverpool have been hard at work behind the scenes getting things in line to ensure they are able to be competitive next season in the same manner as they have this time.

The Reds have agreed contract extensions for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, in what were two blockbuster deals for the squad.

Liverpool are expected to be adding to their squad throughout the summer transfer window, though in the form of new faces as Slot looks to put his fingerprints on the squad for the first time.

Liverpool need to strengthen this summer

After such a dominant season in the Premier League, it would be easy for Liverpool to become complacent and unwilling to take too many risks with the squad.

However, the Reds cannot afford to stand still due to the fact that all the teams around them in the Premier League are set to improve their squads over the summer.

One area that Slot is believed to be interested in improving is at left-back, where the Liverpool boss wants to sign a younger option than Andy Robertson.

Merson is in agreement with that, as he explained to Sportskeeda (24 April) that this is the position he expects them to strengthen.

He said: “Liverpool have basically signed two £100 million-worth players with the renewals of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. They are basically the best players in the world in their respective positions.

“Liverpool now need a new left-back and I expect them to get Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, which will sort out their business for the summer.”

Liverpool might also need a right-back

Merson might believe that Liverpool should go and sign a left-back this summer, but the Reds could also be in the market for a right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract is due to expire at the end of this season, and the homegrown star has yet to commit to a new deal.

That’s because it is widely believed he will be moving to Real Madrid in the summer, which would leave a huge gap in Slot’s team.

Many Liverpool fans believe that Conor Bradley is ready to step up and take that spot in the team on a full-time basis, but Slot has hinted at not being ready to play him while Alexander-Arnold is in the squad.
