‘Joe Gomez exit inevitable’ amid £50m Liverpool transfer news

Joe Gomez has always been a peripheral figure at Liverpool, unable to cement his place in the hub of Liverpool’s back line.

Despite being in and out of the team during his almost 10 years at Anfield, he has made 241 appearances for the club across all competitions.

If reports come to fruition, then Gomez’s decade with the Reds looks set to come to an end, with Arne Slot eyeing a £50million move for another centre-back.

Liverpool set to bolster their back line

Although Slot is yet to lift the Premier League trophy, he will be planning ahead as he aims to retain his soon-to-be title.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are pushing to sign AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, who he says has a £50m release clause.

If they sign the Spaniard, then the Merseyside outfit would have Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarrell Quansah and Huijsen in their ranks, meaning Gomez would fall further down the pecking order.

Given that the club have also been heavily linked with signing Bournemouth full-back Milos Kerkez this summer, the versatile defender is set to be overlooked.

With only 13 appearances to his name this season, the time has come for the former Charlton Athletic man to embark on a fresh challenge.

Liverpool must sell Gomez this summer

Gomez has won it all during his time with Liverpool, lifting eight trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

Despite such a lengthy spell with the Reds, the 27-year-old has never been able to cement himself in the starting eleven.

Several managers have come and gone, but the centre-back’s situation has remained much the same: a rotation player.

Under Slot, the defender has endured one of his most challenging seasons at the club, with his lowest appearance tally since the 2021/22 season.

Gomez’s opportunities have been limited

With the prospect of van Dijk, Konate, and Huijsen within the Liverpool ranks, there is no place for Gomez.

At 27, the Englishman has plenty to offer in football, and his performances during the 2023/24 season suggest he can still play at a high level.

Aston Villa have been linked with the defender and will reportedly make a move for him if they can offload Diego Carlos this summer.

With Liverpool primed to add more quality to their ranks this summer, it is time for Gomez to embark on a fresh challenge.
