Liverpool ‘to seal new transfer’ after Virgil van Dijk announcement

Liverpool still need to be active in the summer transfer window, regardless of recent contract news.

The Reds have had plenty to cheer about lately as they move closer to lifting the Premier League, now just two wins away from achieving that.

The Merseyside giants have also made some significant steps forward behind the scenes, announcing new contracts for both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Both men were out of contract at the end of this season, and there was no shortage of speculation about their futures and where they might go.

Liverpool need another centre-back

Some people wondered if Van Dijk signing a new contract would mean that Liverpool didn’t need to sign another centre-back this summer, but that’s not the case.

Arne Slot still needs to add further quality in this area of the pitch, as it has been a genuine issue for them throughout the season due to injuries.

While the Liverpool captain has been ever-present at the back, the same cannot be said for his defensive partners, particularly Joe Gomez.

Injuries have meant that Slot has often had to swap around who Van Dijk has played alongside, and that’s why the Premier League giants could look at the summer transfer window to resolve the situation.

The Reds may no longer need to try and find a player of Van Dijk’s quality, which was always going to prove difficult, and an additional player would heavily bolster the squad.

Liverpool will be keen not to rest on their laurels after this season, as other teams look to strengthen around them, which is why bringing in a new centre-back would make sense for them.

Liverpool might also need a full-back

Even though Liverpool have retained the services of Salah and Van Dijk, the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold is still uncertain.

The England international is out of contract at the end of the summer, and unlike his teammates, he has yet to extend his stay at Anfield.

It is widely believed that the right-back will be joining Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, and that would lead to the Reds needing a new player in that position.
