Gary Lineker shares what’ll happen next with Van Dijk amid Liverpool exit fears

Gary Lineker has shared his thoughts as the contract of Virgil van Dijk continues to tick down at Liverpool.

The Netherlands international has been a stalwart since signing for the Reds from Southampton in 2018 but could soon face a free transfer exit.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the campaign, and as of yet, the defender hasn’t put pen to paper on a new contract with Arne Slot’s side.

Looking ahead to the summer, Lineker has shared his belief for the future of the towering centre-back at Anfield.

Lineker reacts as Van Dijk contract saga continues

There have been plenty of issues with contracts on Merseyside this season, which have certainly left supporters frustrated on the terraces.

This could see Trent Alexander-Arnold depart for Real Madrid at the end of the season as the Reds lose one of their biggest assets.

Luckily, Mohamed Salah has agreed to a new contract in L4, and fans will be hoping that his Dutchman teammate will follow his lead.

This could be in the pipeline after Van Dijk netted the winner for the Reds against West Ham in a huge win in pursuit of the Premier League title.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football (14 April), Lineker has shared his belief that the ex-Celtic man will agree to a new deal based on his full-time comments.

He said: “It’s good to see that he’s signed a new contract, especially at Liverpool, the fans will be delighted.

“I suspect with the way Virgil van Dijk spoke after the game, I think he might be following suit, which will be a huge plus for the football club going ahead.”

There is no doubt that the Dutchman would be a massive miss if he were to depart Anfield at the end of the season.

Links between Van Dijk and Bayern Munich have arisen in recent weeks, but hopes are building of a new deal at Anfield being possible in the near future.

This will represent a perfect start to the summer for the Reds, who will be keen to add to their squad and build on their successes under Slot.

It will be interesting to see if the 33-year-old will pen a new deal and how that will impact the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah next season.
