Salah new contract: Finance expert makes ‘absolutely enormous’ Liverpool wage claim

Liverpool fans may have a reason to be slightly dubious over Mohamed Salah’s new contract extension.

The Egypt international put pen to paper on a contract extension on Friday (11 April) to end any speculation regarding his long-term future.

Salah’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of this season, which had fans nervous that he would end up leaving on a free transfer, as Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to.

However, unlike the full-back who is likely to leave his boyhood club, Salah has signed a new deal which will keep him at Liverpool until 2027.

It gives a major boost to Arne Slot, who now doesn’t have to try and replace the winger this season, which would have proved to be a difficult task to pull off given his performances this season.

The news has also just provided a positive boost in morale for fans, who are currently excitedly following their team toward an expected Premier League title win this season.

Salah’s new contract will be costly

Salah staying at Liverpool is undoubtedly a positive situation for the club due to the quality he provides on the pitch, with few players in Premier League history matching his output.

Salah’s goals have been pivotal to Liverpool’s success this season, as they would have struggled to win as many games without him in the team.

However, keeping Salah does come at a cost due to his quality as one of the world’s best footballers right now, which is something Stefan Borson reminded people of.

The financial expert took to X (11 April) in a bid to remind Liverpool fans of the costly facts that extending Salah’s deal will provide.

He said: “Always worth remembering that a well run Liverpool still means an absolutely enormous wage bill. Not a criticism, just a fact.”

Liverpool’s wage bill could rise again with Virgil Van Dijk

While it’s unknown whether or not Salah has received a pay bump at this point, if he has then it’s likely that Virgil Van Dijk will receive the same treatment.

It is widely believed that the Liverpool captain will be re-signing and committing his future to the Merseyside giants, with his current contract also expiring at the end of this season.

Netherlands international Van Dijk is expected to sign until 2027 alongside Salah, giving Liverpool another couple of years with him in the squad.
