Mohamed Salah contract: Paul Merson called out by ex-pro over Liverpool comment
Paul Merson has been left red-faced after Mohamed Salah signed a new contract at Liverpool.
The Egyptian will remain at Anfield until at least 2027 after putting pen to paper on an extended stay on Merseyside.
The 32-year-old has notched 32 goals and 22 assists in 45 matches for the Reds this season and has been a key part of the Premier League title charge, and can now put all the distractions to one side and finish the season strongly.

Boyd sends Merson dig after Liverpool announce Salah deal
Liverpool supporters are relieved that Salah has signed fresh terms, but Merson will not be after the comments he made earlier this year on the contract trio.
Speaking on Sky Sports (6 February), the ex-Arsenal man said: “Call me a cynic, I don’t think any of them sign.
“I think they wait and see, if they win the league, I don’t know where you go if you are Liverpool.
“When Liverpool won the league in COVID, it wasn’t the same, the Kop wasn’t there, the fans, if they go and win it this time in front of their fans, I just think Salah, Van Dijk, Trent, they have won the Premier League and the Champions League in front of the fans, I don’t see them signing.”
Fellow Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd took to the comments of Salah’s Instagram post announcing that he was staying to send a dig to Merson, simply tagging his colleague along with the eyes emoji.
Liverpool re-signing Salah is huge
The question marks over Salah have done little to hurt his form but supporters have been worried all season that the club would not pay what he wanted and the Egyptian would move on.
It was unfathomable that they could let him walk, when he was still at the peak of his powers, terrorising defenders on a weekly basis.
He is still on course to break the Premier League record for goal contributions in a single season despite a recent drop off. Alan Shearer is the current holder with 47 and Salah needs just three in the final seven matches to equal it.
Perhaps more importantly, the Reds do not have to concern themselves with replacing the former Chelsea ace anytime soon, so can invest more funds into other areas of the squad that need improvement in the summer transfer window, such as left-back and defensive midfield.
There was no doubt that Salah would go down as a Reds legend regardless but the fact that he is staying and can break more records and put himself even higher on the club’s scoring lists means that he will forever be in the history books at Anfield.
