Salah exit: Inter Milan chief speaks out after bombshell Liverpool update

Liverpool have some key contracts to sort at Anfield before they can turn their attention to bringing new players into Anfield for the new season.

It has been reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to depart from Merseyside, to make the move to Real Madrid when his contract comes to an end.

However, the futures of fellow out-of-contract stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are yet to be decided.

Beppe Marotta speaks out after Salah update

Unsurprisingly, there has been plenty of speculation surrounding Salah’s future after the conclusion of the season with the Egyptian having had an excellent campaign, even if he has dropped off of late.

Given the forward would be available on a free transfer in the summer, there was bound to be interest swirling around his services.

Inter Milan’s CEO Beppe Marotta was asked about using the free market for players in the summer transfer window, with the names of Salah and Kevin De Bruyne mentioned.

The chief gave his supporters an answer on what to expect as he told Sky Sports Italia (8 April): “We want to rejuvenate the squad and reduce the wage bill, but also exploit some market opportunities at the level of experienced players.

“We mainly want to focus on names that can be investments for the future.”

The focus on young players directs thoughts away from the likes of Salah, and given it has been reported that the 32-year-old is close to agreeing terms to sign a new deal at Anfield in a bombshell update, this indicates that may well be the case.

Salah will be crucial for Arne Slot

Although not all supporters are happy to see Alexander-Arnold leave Anfield on a free transfer, out of the three out-of-contract players, he was probably the least important to tie down.

Salah, on the other hand, is quite simply irreplaceable and to be at the age he is, playing regularly and contributing goals and assists to his side’s effort, it’s not clear who would be able to do his job as well as him.

The thoughts of the Inter Milan chief may mean nothing, but the fact that he is focusing his search on the younger players does indicate that the talks between Liverpool and their star man are moving in a strong direction.

There is plenty of pressure on Arne Slot to perform to the same levels, if not better, than his side have delivered this season with the expectation that Arsenal will be in better shape to compete.

Therefore, securing Salah’s services on a new deal will no doubt be a massive sigh of relief for the boss, who can then start to think about turning his attentions to new additions too.
