Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard ‘set to seal return to British football’ as odds crash

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard looks set to return to British football.

The 44-year-old’s last role on British shores was a failed stint at Aston Villa, where he won just 13 of 40 matches in charge and was sacked in October 2022.

The Reds icon then took over at Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq but left his role by mutual consent in January after a poor run of results.

However, the Anfield hero could be set for a sensational comeback after a new development emerged.

Gerrard could be set to return as Rangers manager

Gerrard came to the Premier League with significant fanfare after guiding Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign.

However, he could not adapt to the top level and lost his job at Villa Park after a miserable 11 months which left the Villans dangling above the relegation zone.

His stint at Al-Ettifaq was not much better and there are still significant doubts over his abilities to manage in the top-flight in England.

However, he has shown that he can manage in Scotland and he may get the chance to return to the Gers after Philippe Clement was sacked in February.

Barry Ferguson is currently in interim charge but Gerrard has emerged as the bookmakers favourite to get the role on a permanent basis.

The Reds legend is the 2/1 favourite with Bet 365 to take the reins at Ibrox in the summer, with former Southampton boss Russell Martin close behind him at 7/2 and current incumbent Ferguson ranked at 9/2.

Liverpool fans would love to see Gerrard back

Gerrard is one of the most iconic players to ever play at Anfield as he constantly put the club on his back and guided them to an unlikely Champions League triumph in the 2005 final against a star-studded AC Milan side.

While the Anfield faithful is focused on securing a 20th Premier League title under Arne Slot, they would be estastic for Gerrard if he succeeds in getting his managerial career back on track after two significant setbacks.

The former England international will hope to avoid the Reds if he does get the role, as the last time the sides met in October 2022, the L4 outfit ran out 7-1 winners at Ibrox.

Gerrard may dream of a Liverpool return in the dugout but it seems a long way off right now.
