Van Dijk brutally destroys Michael Owen on live TV after Liverpool win v Everton

Virgil van Dijk was not impressed with Michael Owen after Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 on Wednesday.

Arne Slot’s side took a huge step toward the Premier League title by beating local rivals Everton in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield on 2 April.

Just like the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park on Wednesday, 12 February, this clash between Liverpool and Everton wasn’t short of controversy. However, Slot is unlikely to have many complaints after his side picked up a much-needed three points.

This was the perfect way for the Reds to respond after their elimination from the UEFA Champions League and Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle United ahead of the March international break, two defats which Owen touched upon while speaking with van Dijk at full time on Wednesday.

Ibrahima Konaté and van Dijk were criticised during the win against Everton.

However, it was the Dutchman who had the last laugh after he helped his side keep a clean sheet and also got the better of a frosty post-match interaction with former Liverpool striker Owen.

Liverpool look likely to win the Premier League

At full-time on Wednesday, van Dijk was speaking with Owen via Premier League Productions (2 April), with the latter saying to the former, “I’m just thinking, in terms of the season so far, if you’d said at the start of the season, you’re going to win the Premier League, I’m sure everybody would have been over the moon.

“However, it [the season] was building into something really special. How hard was it after a couple of big defeats in cup competitions to get your mind tuned back into the Premier League and finish the season well?

Van Dijk responded, “So you’re suggesting that this season isn’t going to be special anymore?”

In reply, Owen said, “It will be, absolutely it will be special, but it could have been building into something very special”.

And van Dijk shut this down by responding with, “I think we have to change that narrative a little bit”.

Van Dijk spot on after response to Owen

Just because supporters began to speculate and dream that Liverpool could win multiple trophies this season, that doesn’t mean it was ever going to happen or should have been expected.

If you had told anybody connected with Liverpool at the beginning of the season that they would be 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League with eight games to play, they likely would have laughed you out the room.

Many expected the Reds to fall away under Slot. Therefore, if the Dutchman does lead the Anfield side to only their second-ever Premier League title in his first season, that is a remarkable achievement, and cup disappointment doesn’t take anything away from that.
