Luis Suarez sends message to Darwin Nunez ahead of Liverpool return

Darwin Nunez is friends with Liverpool icon Luis Suarez, having played together for the Uruguay national team.

Nunez is among a host of Liverpool players who went away on international duty in the last fortnight, featuring in both of Uruguay’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia.

Although Marcelo Bielsa’s side failed to win both those games, they are well on course to book a ticket to the United States, as they sit third in the standings for the CONMEBOL qualifiers.

Suarez issues rallying cry to Nunez

Nunez is now primed to return to action for Liverpool when they lock horns with Everton at Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday, 2 April.

As he prepares to return to Merseyside, the 25-year-old summed up his international break in a social media post, expressing his love for Uruguay.

“Always first my country, my national team”, Nunez wrote on Instagram (26 March).

Suarez was among those who responded to the post despite Nunez, who is often the subject of backlash and criticism on social media, limiting the comments on his Instagram account.

The former Liverpool hitman notably issued a rallying cry as Uruguay edges closer to securing World Cup qualification.

“Of course, yes, Darwin! Let’s go up, one more step to the goal! Up Uruguay”, Suarez wrote.

Nunez to leave Liverpool this summer

Nunez will be looking to end the season on a high after being inconsistent throughout the campaign.

His performances have left much to be desired and it is no surprise that he is being linked with a move away from Anfield ahead of the summer transfer window.

Nunez’s record for Liverpool this season.

It is worth noting that the Reds forked out an initial sum of £64million to sign the centre-forward from Benfica in 2022.

While Nunez has shown glimpses of his world-class talent, there is no denying that he has failed to live up to expectations in the three years he has been on Merseyside.

Arne Slot’s side are, therefore, likely to make an effort to cut their losses on the former Almeria frontman when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.
