Real Madrid to haunt Liverpool again over Trent Alexander-Arnold replacement

Liverpool were dealt a blow in recent days as it emerged that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to move to Real Madrid.

Alexander-Arnold’s pending move to Real Madrid has caused fury among Liverpool fans, with the Scouse defender moving on a free transfer.

This move also comes after Liverpool lost two Champions League finals to Real Madrid under Jurgen Klopp, in 2018 and 2022, and their record against the Spanish giants is not a positive one.

Real Madrid could also haunt Liverpool again when it comes to their Alexander-Arnold replacement at right-back, with a deal now reportedly close.

Liverpool close to agreeing deal for Jeremie Frimpong

A report from Spanish outlet Defensa Central has now claimed that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong is seen as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, and a more attacking right-back option than youngster Conor Bradley.

The 24-year-old is a key creative figure for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side, and has provided 11 assists in 40 games this season.

Although Frimpong can play at right-back, he often plays as a wing-back in a five, and it may take some adaptation for him to adjust to playing in a back four under Arne Slot.

Given his supreme attacking ability, there may not be a more suitable replacement for Alexander-Arnold than Frimpong.

However, even if Liverpool sign Frimpong, they will be wary of Real Madrid for a key reason.

Jeremie Frimpong has Real Madrid ‘dream’

The same report has also revealed that whilst Frimpong is happy to join Liverpool, his true dream was to join Real Madrid, but Alexander-Arnold’s move has prevented this.

“The Dutch footballer had the dream of playing at Real Madrid, because he has always followed the white team. However, his contractual status and that of Arnold have determined that this is his future,” the report added.

Even if Frimpong joins and performs well, there may be some concern behind the scenes if Real Madrid reignite any interest in the Dutch international.

Liverpool have suffered at the hands of Real Madrid on several occasions now, and this may not stop with the Alexander-Arnold deal in the years ahead.
