Liverpool transfers: ‘Wild Alexander Isak deal is Michael Edwards masterstroke’

Michael Edwards could come in to assist Richard Hughes as a huge summer of change looms at Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is said to have agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer, while Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk could also leave when their contracts expire at the end of the season.

Luis Diaz is heavily linked with a move away from Liverpool as well, as Arne Slot has grown frustrated with him as the season has progressed.

With uncertainty over Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota’s futures too, the Reds are set for an upheaval ahead of next season, meaning Hughes will be a busy man.

Edwards to orchestrate Isak deal

Hughes is not new to upheavals, having overseen nine new signings for Bournemouth in his last summer transfer window as their technical director in 2023.

However, Liverpool fans have grown frustrated with his lack of transfer activity at Anfield so far, and that is why he may need help from Edwards this time.

Edwards earned a reputation as an elite transfer guru after negotiating several deals for the Reds and returned to the fold after two years last summer, joining FSG as their chief executive of football.

Although he is not directly employed by Liverpool, there is no reason why he cannot contribute towards their transfer business ahead of the 2025-26 season, particularly with the case of Isak.

The Merseyside-based club are interested in signing Isak as they look to strengthen their options up front, but have to break the bank as Newcastle have slapped a hefty £150million price tag on him.

There is no doubt that FSG would prefer to bring that sum down, setting the stage for Edwards to roll back the years and pull off a transfer masterstroke.

Jarell Quansah swap deal on cards at Liverpool

Meanwhile, Newcastle may be playing right into Edwards and Liverpool’s hands, as news of their interest in Jarell Quansah has emerged.

Newcastle have set their sights on signing a right-sided centre-back this summer and Quansah is said to be a target, according to The Times.

The newspaper reported via their website on Wednesday (26 March) that the Magpies believe they would be able to sign the centre-back for £30m plus add-ons.

It is worth noting that Newcastle had enquired about Quansah last summer when the Reds were interested in a deal for Anthony Gordon.

The two clubs had discussed the framework of a deal that would have seen Gordon join the Anfield outfit with Joe Gomez heading in the other direction.

While that deal did not materialise, it leaves the door open for a similar swap between the Premier League teams this year.

And the ball is in Edwards and Liverpool’s court to convince Newcastle of such a deal regardless of how wild that may seem.
