Liverpool miss £43.7m windfall after Champions League exit – Exclusive

Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain at the start of March.

The Reds are still on course to secure the Premier League title under Arne Slot, though at one point, it appeared as though they could have taken the Champions League home with them.

However, a defeat to PSG in the round of 16 ended any hopes of that, leaving them frustrated at what was a good opportunity for further silverware.

With that said, they may have missed out on far more than just a trophy, given the financial aspect of the competition.

Champions League windfall explained by finance expert

Not only is the Champions League regarded as the most prestigious trophy in football, but it is also the competition that provides the biggest monetary incentive for clubs competing within it.

However, Liverpool’s defeat to PSG ended any hopes of them receiving further money, with Dan Plumley, when exclusively speaking to Liverpool News, highlighting the missed opportunity.

The finance expert said: “The Carabao Cup is not gonna make a difference at all to Liverpool, other than the pain of not getting a trophy.

“The Champions League is where the money’s at, they will have already banked about £67.3 million, which is a significant amount given the restructuring of that competition, but if you run down the list of what might have been, and Liverpool obviously had expectations of winning that tournament.

Champions LeagueFinancial aspect
> Quarterfinal£67.3m
Quarterfinal£10.5m
Semi final£12.6m
Final£15.1m
Winners> Quarterfinal
Liverpool exited before the quarterfinal

“They are kind of serial winners of it in the past, so it’s £10.5m for the quarters, it’s £12.6m to get to the semis, £15.1m to get to the final, and £5.4m to win the thing, so that’s where the kind of financial pain is because that’s another £43.7m if you can win the competition, so it will be the Champions League exit that has most effect financially.

“Liverpool can cope with it for sure, but another £43.7m if you had gone all the way in that competition, is a significant amount of value.”

Liverpool still on course for successful campaign

Given this is Slot’s first season in charge, to come away as winners of the Premier League would be a remarkable achievement, and it appears as though they will achieve that with ease.

With that said, ambitions will be there to achieve even more success in the future, though Liverpool will have plenty of decisions to make in the summer to get to that point.

Recruitment will once again be key for The Reds as they prepare for a season in which they will be hoping to retain the Premier League title.
