Gary Lineker names player Liverpool could sign instead of Newcastle’s Isak

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has been heavily linked with a transfer to Liverpool in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Reds are looking to sign a centre-forward who can deliver goals and ease the pressure on Mohamed Salah, who may yet leave Liverpool this summer.

Isak has been a name that has been floating around for far too long. Isak is definitely on Liverpool’s shortlist in the summer, but whether a move takes place or not remains to be seen as Newcastle are in no mood to let their star striker leave.

Now, Gray Lineker has named a player Liverpool could sign instead of Isak.

No Liverpool move for Isak?

Along with Isak, there are four other strikers on Arne Slot’s shortlist for the summer transfer window. While Isak may be the most popular choice, Julian Alvarez, Matheus Cunha, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap are also on that list.

Isak showed what Liverpool have been missing as he scored the Magpies’ second goal in the Carabao Cup final. The Reds do not have a clinical striker in their ranks as Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota have failed to deliver.

The burden of scoring has solely rested on Salah’s shoulders as strikers Jota and Nunez have collectively chipped in with just 15 goals in the entire season.

Isak is the ideal choice but Lineker has suggested the name of Delap as an option for the Reds. With Ipswich Town potentially heading towards relegation, Delap will be wanted by many top clubs.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast [21 March], when discussing Delap’s possible destinations, Liverpool’s name was floated by Lineker after Alan Shearer said Isak would not be leaving Newcastle.

Liverpool need to cut their losses on Darwin Nunez

Nunez joined Liverpool in the summer of 2022 and since then has had a turbulent time on Merseyside. In three seasons, the Uruguayan has made 136 appearances for the Reds and netted just 40 goals.

His inconsistency in front of goal has been a major cause of concern, which is why he was demoted to the bench by Arne Slot.

Liverpool paid £64million for the 25-year-old, but the returns on that investment have been poor. It is high time that the Merseysiders cut their losses on Nunez and offload him to bring in a new reliable striker in the summer – whether that be Isak, Delap or anyone else.
