Martin Keown slammed for ‘ridiculous’ Liverpool and Arsenal comparison

Danny Murphy has slammed Martin Keown for his ridiculous comparison between Liverpool and Arsenal after what has happened this season.

The Reds were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after losing the last-16 on penalties.

Arne Slot’s team then lost the Carabao Cup final 2-1 to Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday (16 March).

Keown believes that had Arsenal lost two games of such importance, they would have been ridiculed for bottling it.

Murphy slams Keown for Liverpool and Arsenal comparison

Murphy believes it’s ridiculous to suggest Liverpool have bottled the season.

The former Liverpool midfielder thinks it’s ridiculous to compare Arsenal’s situation with the Reds as they won the Carabao Cup last season and barely lost to PSG in the last-16.

While Keown admitted that the Merseyside outfit are having an impressive season, he believes the Gunners would have been mocked if they suffered similar defeats.

Speaking on talkSPORT (19 March, 10:10), Murphy said: “It’s a ridiculous comparison. I don’t even know where Martin [Keown] is going with it because how can you compare? Liverpool have been in the League Cup final three out of the last four years. Won it last year.

“There’s no bottling going on to lose a cup final or a cup competition. Even in the Champions League, they drew and lost on penalties.”

Slot to be disappointed after Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle

Slot is on course to win the Premier League title in his debut season as they have a 12-point lead over second-place Arsenal, and not many people had high expectations from the former Feyenoord head coach.

The Dutch manager replaced Jurgen Klopp, and fans didn’t have a lot of hope from the Reds after they signed just one player in the summer transfer window.

A few weeks back, the Merseyside outfit were seen as one of the best teams in the world, which is a testament to the work Slot has done in a few months.

While losing to PSG and Newcastle has put a dent in the Reds’ season, it doesn’t take away from the fact that they have been impressive in the current campaign.

The Anfield faithful recognise the work the team has done this season and are already looking forward with great anticipation.

In the upcoming transfer window, significant changes could potentially be on the horizon for the Merseyside outfit, with Darwin Nunez’s exit from Anfield being one of them.

The Reds are on course to lift their 20th league title, something Arsenal haven’t done since 2004.
