Paul Scholes slammed over ‘awful and embarrassing’ remark after Liverpool v Newcastle
Paul Scholes will be regretting his comments in the wake of Newcastle’s EFL Cup victory over Liverpool at Wembley.
Liverpool suffered further heartbreak days after crashing out of the UEFA Champions League as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle in the League Cup final on Sunday, 16 March.
Arne Slot’s side are now poised to end the season with only the Premier League despite looking like serious contenders for a quadruple at one point.
As for Newcastle, the occasion marks great jubilation, having put an end to their 70-year wait for a trophy.

Scholes accused of mocking Newcastle triumph v Liverpool
Newcastle winning their first trophy in 70 years is such a huge achievement that there is talk about the club building a statue for Eddie Howe as a token of appreciation.
However, Scholes could not help but scoff when a Magpies supporter suggested the same on The Overlap Fan Debate show (18 March).
“You won the League Cup. Everyone tries to get knocked out of that all year”, the Manchester United legend said.
Liverpool | Team Stats | Newcastle |
7 | Shots | 17 |
2 | Shots on target | 6 |
66% | Possession | 34% |
450 | Passes | 227 |
79% | Pass Accuracy | 62% |
14 | Fouls | 10 |
Many, though, have found Scholes’ reaction to be in bad taste, with Luke Edwards tearing him to shreds on social media.
The Telegraph journalist described the pundit’s remark as “awful” and “embarrassing”, and hit out at him for having a lack of understanding about other clubs’ ambitions despite his stature.
“Paul Scholes’ reaction here is genuinely awful”, Edwards wrote on his personal X account (18 March).
“Complete lack of a wider understanding of football and other clubs’ dreams and aspirations.
“Mocking, dismissive and out of touch. A great player, one of the best, but this is embarrassing from him.”

Scholes should be ashamed of Newcastle remark
Big Premier League clubs sometimes tend to disregard the EFL Cup, often fielding their squad players.
However, winning the tournament is no mean feat for Newcastle, who have been vying for a trophy for seven decades.
It is also worth noting that Howe’s side beat Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest – all the teams in the top four in the Premier League at the moment – on the road to glory, making their triumph that much more significant.
As for Scholes, he should be ashamed of the way he reacted to the Newcastle fan’s question.
Some top-level pundits and club legends often display a tendency to disregard other teams and competitions.
It was only days ago that Jamie Carragher found himself in hot water after belittling the AFCON.
