Sky Sports slammed after what happened before Liverpool v Newcastle United
Newcastle United ended their 69-year major-trophy draught as they defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final in front of millions watching around the world.
Liverpool’s dreams of winning their first trophy under Arne Slot were shattered as the Reds failed to beat Newcastle in the final at Wembley.
The Magpies took a two-goal lead via Daniel Burn and Aleksander Isak. In the dying stages of the game, Federico Chiesa got one goal back for the Reds but it was too late to inspire a comeback.
Eddie Howe managed to guide his team to a trophy after failing at this exact stage two years ago when Newcastle lost to Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final in 2023.
The former Bournemouth manager garnered praises for his side’s victory, whereas Slot now faces a challenge to uplift the spirit of the squad following a disappointing loss.

Virgil van Dijk caught swearing on Sky Sports
When athletes are playing high-octane, intense sport, often because of adrenaline rush, they are caught swearing or using inappropriate words.
Often, these words don’t mean anything as they either come out in the heat of the moment or because of the high adrenaline.
Ahead of the final, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was caught swearing in the pre-game huddle. With the mic and camera hovering above the Liverpool huddle, it picked up the Dutchman’s voice.
Sky Sports put out an apology for inappropriate words on their broadcast, and commentator Peter Drury also said sorry for any inappropriate words heard by the viewers.
Stats | Liverpool | Newcastle |
Possession | 66% | 34% |
Shots | 7 | 17 |
Shots on target | 2 | 6 |
Chances | 2 | 3 |
However, Guy Mowbray, another commentator, lambasted Sky putting an apology out.
He tweeted: “If you put a camera and mic right in the pre kick off team huddle…..please don’t then make your commentator apologise for ‘any bad language you may have heard’.”
Liverpool must regroup now
It has been a very tough week for Liverpool as they lost to PSG at Anfield in the Champions League and crashed out of the competition on penalties, ending their European run.
Now, they have also failed to win their first trophy under Slot as they lost to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
The two losses have seen Liverpool go out of two competitions and now only have the Premier League title to play for.
While Liverpool continue to cruise in the Premier League, Slot must be careful to not let the disappointment of results in other competitions affect their momentum in the league.
They are 12 points above second-placed Arsenal and are in the driver’s seat to win their first Premier League title four years and end Manchester City’s dominance.
