Newcastle’s hands tied as ‘Liverpool set to agree’ mammoth £80m transfer

Liverpool look set to inflict a transfer blow on Newcastle United as the two teams prepare to face each other in the Carabao Cup final.

Liverpool and Newcastle will face off at Wembley on Sunday (16 March).

It is a game that could go either way, with Jamie Carragher changing his mind about his prediction for the highly-anticipated clash.

Alexander Isak boasts an impressive record against Liverpool, and will look to fire the Magpies to their first trophy since 1969 in North-West London.

However, Arne Slot’s side already appear to have one hand on the Premier League title, and will be keen to lift the Carabao Cup and take a big step closer toward winning a double.

Therefore, this is a difficult game to predict, although Liverpool have been handed a slight psychological boost after transfer news emerged ahead of the clash.

Liverpool set to deal £80million transfer blow to Newcastle

As reported in the print edition of the Daily Star (16 March, page 47), Liverpool are set to beat Newcastle United to the signature of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi.

Anfield is the preferred destination for the centre-back, a fact which Newcastle are aware of.

Guéhi is expected to complete an £80million move to Liverpool this summer, with Premier League rivals Chelsea – the team where Guéhi started his career – emerging as the main rivals to Liverpool for the 24-year-old’s signature.

This could be just one of multiple transfer blows which Liverpool deliver to Newcastle this summer, as talk of Isak moving to Anfield continues to rumble on.

Guéhi could replace Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool is uncertain, with the Dutchman out of contract in the summer.

Therefore, it is likely that Guéhi would arrive as a replacement for the centre-back, especially if he is set to cost Liverpool £80m.

As a result, some fans might be sceptical as van Dijk has been such a huge success at Anfield. However, Guéhi is a top defender with Premier League experience who is still very young.

Therefore, if fans give him time, they might find that he achieves just as much success as van Dijk.
