Jamie Carragher speaks out on Trippier controversy in Newcastle win v Liverpool
Liverpool can have no complaints after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
Arne Slot’s side were up against the wall from the get-go as Newcastle pushed them onto the backfoot and took the lead through Dan Burn towards the end of the first half.
Alexander Isak doubled the lead for the Magpies early in the second period before Liverpool could get a hold of the game.
Federico Chiesa halved the deficit in added time, but it was only a consolation for the runaway Premier League winners if anything.

Jamie Carragher agrees with Gary Neville on controversy
Liverpool were the cause of their own undoing and cannot point the finger at anyone but themselves for the defeat, although many fans are wondering if the result would have been different had John Brooks awarded them a penalty for a handball on Kieran Trippier with the game still at 0-0.
The Reds players appealed for a spot-kick after the ball struck Trippier’s arm in the Newcastle box during a brief battle with Luis Diaz, only for both Brooks and the VAR to dismiss it.

Reacting to the incident on live commentary, Gary Neville argued that the Merseyside-based club may have received a penalty had the incident occurred in a European fixture.
Jamie Carragher was in agreement with his Sky Sports colleague, insisting that Slot and Co would be fuming if such a penalty was awarded against them in a match.
“No, it’s not a penalty”, Carragher said on Sky Sports Main Event (16 March, 5:34 pm).
“He [Trippier] is obviously just running back, the ball bounces up and just clips him on his arm.
“I don’t think we want to see penalties for that, I think Gary was right [about it] in commentary.
“It’s one of them ones, if it’s against you, you’re not happy. Liverpool wouldn’t be happy with a penalty going against them if it was at the other end.”

Liverpool see season fizzle out
It has been a disappointing few days for Liverpool as they crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after losing to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on penalties on Tuesday, 11 March.
Any hopes of putting that frustration behind them crashing down after Newcastle handed them a 2-1 defeat in the EFL Cup, extending their wait for a trophy this season.
That is not to say Liverpool’s season has been entirely disappointing as they are still on course to win the Premier League, where they sit 12 points clear at the top with nine games left.
