Gary Neville reacts as Liverpool lose Carabao Cup final to Newcastle

Gary Neville reacted live on Sky Sports as Newcastle beat Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies last won a major trophy in 1969 before Sunday night at Wembley, when they beat the Reds 2-1.

Dan Burn and Aleksandr Isak scored for Newcastle with Federico Chiesa scoring for Liverpool in stoppage time.

Eddie Howe hailed by Gary Neville

Eddie Howe was hired as the Magpies boss right after the PSF took over the club.

While it was met with scepticism initially, within a few months he showed fans that he was the right one for the job.

He guided them to the EFL Cup final two seasons ago as well but they ended up losing to Manchester United.

However, against Liverpool, despite being heavy underdogs, Howe managed to guide his team over the line.

It was a nervy finish, but they still managed to get the job done.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event in the aftermath of the contest, Neville said at 6:47pm: “I’m delighted for Eddie Howe, I really am.”

Arne Slot must ensure his Liverpool players bounce back and get even better next season

Arne Slot must lift his Liverpool squad after their 2-1 loss to Newcastle and their Champions League exit to PSG, as the Premier League title remains mathematically within reach with over two months of the season left.

These setbacks, while bruising, are not fatal and the Reds still hold a significant lead, but momentum is slipping with rivals closing in.

Slot needs to instill resilience, reminding players like Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk of their proven quality and capacity to rebound.

The focus should be on regrouping for key upcoming fixtures, like against West Ham, to steady the ship and maintain their edge.

Beyond this season, a strong finish lays the foundation for a fiercer 2025-26, especially in Europe.

By keeping heads up, Slot can harness this adversity to fuel a late title push and ensure the squad returns hungrier, avoiding a spiral that could derail their ambitions.
