Curtis Jones hits back after possible Jurgen Klopp dig he made at Liverpool

Liverpool have an opportunity to clinch their first silverware of the season when they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League, with a 15-point cushion over second place Arsenal and appear certain to win their first top-flight title since 2020.

Arne Slot’s men were knocked out of the Champions League via a penalty shootout defeat to PSG on Tuesday, but will still fancy their chances of winning two trophies this season.

The new Liverpool boss seemingly had a tough role on his hands, having replaced legendary predecessor Jurgen Klopp, but has done a stellar job so far.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has now opened up on his pre-season comments in which he appeared to criticise former boss Klopp.

During the Reds’ pre-season tour in America, Jones said: “Probably the happiest I’ve been.

“This is now more me. I can get on the ball more, we’re not in a rush to attack.”

Speaking to The Athletic, the midfielder has cleared the air, though: “It definitely wasn’t a dig at Jurgen.

“I owe him so much. Jurgen changed me from a boy to a man.”

Slot has transformed Liverpool ace Jones

While Jones has clarified that his previous comments were not as a criticism towards former boss Klopp, there is no doubt that Slot’s stewardship has suited the England international more.

The midfielder was handed his Three Lions debut back in November, and scored in a 3-0 win over Greece in the UEFA Nations League.

That achievement on the international stage is a strong endorsement of how he has impressively developed under Slot, for whom he has been a heavy feature.

Jones’ next Liverpool outing, which could come from the starting 11 in Sunday’s League Cup final clash with Newcastle, will be his 37th of the season.

While Klopp was Reds boss, Jones was never handed more than 36 appearances in a single season, so it is clear to see why he favours Slot.

The midfielder did miss his penalty during the Champions League defeat to PSG on Tuesday, but he has largely gone from strength to strength this term and has shone in a way in which he never managed under Klopp.
