Virgil van Dijk shares Liverpool contract update after Champions League defeat

Virgil van Dijk has continued to be a force in the Liverpool side this season, leading the Reds towards the Premier League title.

There has been plenty of conversation surrounding the captain this term, with his Liverpool contract expiring at the end of the season and no clear plans for what the future holds.

Nevertheless, the defender has not let the outside noise affect his mindset and continues to perform to his best standards, highlighting just what he can do in red.

Van Dijk delivers blunt Liverpool update

Although Liverpool have had plenty to celebrate this season, that was not the case on Tuesday (11 March) for Arne Slot’s side.

The Reds crashed out of the Champions League on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain on penalties at Anfield, after a 1-0 loss on the night.

It was the away side that came out on top winning 4-2 and dumping Slot’s side out of European football for the season.

Liverpool must bounce back quickly though, with Van Dijk now set to lead his side out to another Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, against Newcastle.

When asked about his ongoing contract saga and whether he would sign a deal, the defender told The Times: “I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment.

“It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There’s just. I keep saying the same thing.”

Liverpool have to act now on van Dijk deal

It’s somewhat understandable why Liverpool haven’t made too much of a push on their contract issues at the moment given how many other things they’ve had to focus on throughout the season so far.

However, after Sunday, all eyes will be on the Premier League with no other distractions, and with that basically wrapped up, attention may move elsewhere slightly.

With that in mind, there is no excuse for Liverpool to mess about for any longer and they must put a deal on the table for Van Dijk and start discussions over his future.

It has been argued that van Dijk is the most important player for Slot’s team to keep hold of if they want to consistently succeed at every level, so it must be sorted.

It could have been down to the loss, but it seems as though the 33-year-old was fed up with not knowing what the future holds and given he was seen talking to PSG leaders after the Champions League defeat, movement could be happening elsewhere.

Therefore, Liverpool have to see this as a warning to act now.
