Alexander Isak transfer: David Ornstein provides major Liverpool update

David Ornstein has provided a significant update as Liverpool are interested in signing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak ahead of the summer transfer window.

Isak has been linked with a move to Anfield after his impressive displays at the Tyneside outfit over the last few seasons.

The Sweden international signed for the Magpies in 2022 from Real Sociedad and, since then, has developed into one of the best forwards in the Premier League.

With the future of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota up in the air and Arne Slot unsure over Mohamed Salah’s expiring contract, the Reds may need to bolster their attack soon.

Ornstein provides update on Liverpool transfer target Isak

Liverpool would be interested in Isak if Newcastle are open to selling him, Ornstein says.

The Athletic journalist has revealed that the Magpies have no intention of listening to offers for the 25-year-old right now, but a change in that stance could see the Reds enter the race.

Ornstein also shared that the Tyneside outfit are looking to offer the Swedish striker a new contract and build their team around him.

Speaking to NBC Sports Soccer on X (12 March), the journalist said: “Newcastle have no intention of selling Isak. They’ve got him under contract until 2028. They pay him very handsomely. And if anything, they want to renew his deal and build with him for the future, not without him. However, what he’s doing on the pitch is attracting interest from elsewhere.

“A club like Liverpool are interested in him if Newcastle genuinely would listen to offers for him. We just don’t know that yet because it’s not on their agenda.”

Slot needs someone like Isak at Anfield

While Slot has done an impressive job at the Merseyside outfit this season, losing to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League showcased some of the frailties in the squad.

Nunez has struggled since his move to Anfield, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him leave at the end of the season.

Jota has also been injury-prone ever since signing for the Reds, making him an unreliable forward.

Luis Diaz’s form has dipped in recent months, leaving Salah to carry the attack for the Dutch manager in the current campaign.

It remains to be seen whether the Egypt international will sign a new deal at the Merseyside outfit, but if he doesn’t, a quality forward should be signed.

While Salah’s presence may hurt Isak due to the 32-year-old’s stature in the team, his exit may pave the way for the Sweden international’s arrival.

Cody Gakpo has finally found his feet at Anfield, but the rest of the attacking line could potentially need a major revamp come next summer.

Isak’s numbers at Newcastle have been impressive, and the 25-year-old could possibly lead the Reds’ line for several years if signed.
