Alan Shearer blasts what he saw in Liverpool v PSG — ‘Nonsense’

Alan Shearer was fuming after one moment as Liverpool faced Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Anfield hosted Luis Enrique’s team on 11 March, with Ousmane Dembele scoring in the 12th minute to level the tie.

Arne Slot’s team came into the second leg with a one-goal advantage after beating the Ligue 1 outfit 1-0 at the Parc des Princes on 5 March.

With the round of 16 tie 1-1 after extra time, the hosts lost on penalties after Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones failed to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the spot.

Liverpool decision v PSG slammed as nonsense by Shearer

Shearer slammed the officials for delaying an offside decision as the Merseyside outfit faced PSG.

The Premier League icon wasn’t pleased the assistant didn’t immediately raise his flag as Achraf Hakimi was clearly behind the Reds’ defence around the 115th minute of the game.

Shearer feels there was no need to keep the play going as the French outfit’s right-back was clearly offside.

Speaking on Prime Video (11 March, 22:27), the ex-striker said: “When it’s four to five yards off like [Hakimi] was, he was clearly offside. That’s the law that infuriates players.

“That’s when the official should be able to flag straight away rather than let it carry on. Nonsense.”

Slot cannot be disappointed at Anfield prospects

Slot is leading Liverpool to another league title after expectations were low at the start of the season.

The Reds are 15 points clear of Arsenal in the Premier League, and the Anfield faithful can smell the 20th league title coming home.

Newcastle United are up next in the Carabao Cup final as the Dutch manager has the chance to lift his first trophy at the Merseyside outfit.

Slot’s team were knocked out of the FA Cup by Plymouth Argyle from the FA Cup after featuring a weakened side in the fourth round of the competition.

Most of the Anfield faithful believe the former Feyenoord manager has exceeded hopes in his debut campaign with the Merseyside outfit.

The Dutch head coach didn’t see much investment in his squad over the last two transfer windows, with Federico Chiesa being the only incoming signing last summer.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah in the final years of their contracts, Slot hasn’t let the uncertainty around their future affect the team too much.

While elimination from the Champions League will be bitter, the Reds have a lot left to play for until the end of the season.
