Gary Neville makes Liverpool claim live from Old Trafford on Sky Sports
Liverpool have taken another step closer to the Premier League title this weekend.
Although they were 1-0 down at half-time, Arne Slot’s side came back to beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday at Anfield, with two goals from Mohamed Salah.
With Arsenal failing to beat Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday, Liverpool now have a 15-point gap, with an extra game played.

Gary Neville makes Liverpool title claim
Slot has adapted to life at Anfield better than many would have expected with his side having lost just one of their Premier League games so far this season.
The Reds also have a Carabao Cup final ahead of them next Sunday (16 March) and remain in the Champions League after finishing top of the new format.
Despite that, Gary Neville has suggested that the title race this term is not necessarily a reflection of Liverpool’s dominance.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News from Old Trafford (9 March) Neville was asked if the title race was over, saying: “Not quite. I mean, you’re right. Liverpool have been strong but Arsenal should have been closer to them.
“Arsenal of last season are as good, if not better than the Liverpool of this season, so Arsenal should be neck and neck with Liverpool.”
Liverpool deserve more credit this season
Neville is not the first pundit to suggest that Liverpool sitting at the top of the table is not solely down to their success this season, with Gary Lineker having been blasted for a similar opinion.
There is no doubt that Arsenal have struggled with injuries this season and find themselves lacking at the top end of the field, but that cannot be claimed as the reason that the Reds are sitting so comfortably at the top of the table.
Team | Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goals for | Goals against | Goal difference | Points |
Liverpool | 29 | 21 | 7 | 1 | 69 | 27 | 42 | 70 |
Arsenal | 28 | 15 | 10 | 3 | 52 | 24 | 28 | 55 |
Slot’s side has had to deal with their share of injuries, with key players like Cody Gakpo forced to spend time sitting on the sidelines.
The difference is that the Reds made sure they had the appropriate players in the side to minimise any loss in the team, with Darwin Nunez the latest to step up.
Mikel Arteta’s side had the opportunity to recruit during the winter transfer window to cope with the injuries they had, but they were unable to add the right players.
However, even when fully fit, Arsenal have not looked like more of a threat than Liverpool this term and neither did they last season when they still were unable to win the league.
Other sides have been unlucky, which certainly hasn’t made Liverpool’s job any harder but producing a side that can win so many games in the manner they have, is certainly no fluke.
