Barcelona star reacts to what Darwin Nunez did in Liverpool win v Southampton

Darwin Nunez ended a 10-game goal drought to help Liverpool earn a 3-1 victory over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Nunez has had a lacklustre 2024-25 season, having only managed to score in three Premier League games prior to the clash with Southampton on 8 March.

However, the Uruguay international stepped up for Liverpool when they needed him as he pulled them level against the Saints after Will Smallbone gave the visitors the lead in the first half before winning a penalty for Mohamed Salah’s first.

This came just three days after the striker set up Harvey Elliott for a dramatic winner in Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday (5 March).

Ronaldo Araujo tips hat to Nunez after goal in Premier League

It was Salah who grabbed the headlines as scored twice from the spot and went level with Sergio Aguero as the fifth-highest scorer in the Premier League of all time, but Nunez’s role in the win cannot be understated.

The 25-year-old was evidently pleased to get his name back on the scoresheet as he took to social media to express his delight.

“Good win, let’s keep going!”, Nunez wrote on Instagram (8 March) along with a heart emoji.

Ryan Gravenberch and Luis Diaz were among those who quickly reacted to the post, while former Reds goalkeeper Adrian also chimed in.

However, the most notable reaction came from Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, who tipped his hat to his Uruguay teammate.

“Resiliencia”, Araujo wrote along with fire and heart emojis.

Nunez to lose place in Liverpool XI

Nunez was the standout performer for Liverpool against Southampton despite Salah grabbing a brace.

However, that might not be enough for the former Benfica frontman to keep his place in the starting line-up when Arne Slot’s side face PSG in the second leg of their Champions League tie at Anfield on Tuesday, 11 March.

It would not be a surprise to see Slot draft Diogo Jota back into the team for the European showdown.

The Dutchman will also be hopeful of having Cody Gakpo back available when the Reds lock horns with Newcastle in the EFL Cup final at Wembley next Sunday, 16 March.
