Jurgen Klopp multi-million pay-off revealed after Liverpool exit

Liverpool have revealed they spent millions of pounds in pay-off fees to Jurgen Klopp in their official accounts.

The legendary manager departed Anfield at the end of last season after a shock announcement was made in late January 2024.

It is safe to say that things have gone well under his successor, Arne Slot, with his side sitting top of the Premier League with eight games remaining.

Now it has been revealed exactly how much was spent to release the German and his coaching team at the end of the campaign.

Liverpool announce £9.6m pay-off for Klopp and his staff

The former Borussia Dortmund manager opted to depart the Reds after a nine-year period since taking charge in 2015.

Klopp cited tiredness as his reason for stepping away from the L4 dugout, which came as a surprise given his contract situation at the time.

The 57-year-old’s deal wasn’t due to expire until the end of the 2025/2026 so his early departure meant a decision had to be made at Anfield.

It has now been confirmed by Liverpool’s official accounts, shared by The Athletic (28 February), with their total administrative costs went up by £38m to £600m.

Part of this rise was a combined £9.6m pay-off given to Klopp, and his backroom staff including Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, Vitor Matos, John Achterberg, Jack Robinson, Andreas Kornmayer and Andreas Schlumberger.

This group received a fee to cover the time they had remaining on their contract’s on Merseyside when the German head coach opted to call time on his spell.

Liverpool loving life under Slot after Klopp departure

It is safe to say that Slot has taken to life in the English football like a duck to water and is all but certain to secure a Premier League title in his first season.

With the influence of Mohamed Salah in particular, the Reds have been easily the best side in the division, losing just one league game all season.

This looks set to replicate the achievement of Klopp within one campaign, given the German one only one title during his spell in charge.

That isn’t to say that the Dutchman has come anywhere close to the legacy of the current Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull but if he maintains this level of achievement, he will certainly come close.
